Voulkano Monastery
On the top of the Ithomi mountain (802m altitude), in the holiest place in Messinia, high up on the mountain plateau, where Zeus Ithomatas would receive prayers and sacrifice, the famous Holy Monastery of Voulkano was founded, according to tradition in 726, under Leon Isavros or Emperor Andronicus. The old monastery is not open to visitors, and is considered a national monument. The new monastery of Voulkano, at a lower altitude, was founded in 1625, and is open for visitors.
